Residential Stay

Tresillian’s Residential Stay program is a service for parents who have had continuous issues with their babies. The program is a Residential unit located at the Tresillian centres where families have the ability to live in up to 5 days and engage in more severe issues regarding parenting. However, due to health and safety reasons, it is significant that you and your baby are well and healthy before joining the stay. This is ensured through a referral from a health expert i.e. a local Child and Family Health Nurse, Family Doctor, or Paediatrician.

The Residential Stay program provides health, education, counselling and part child care services. This is done via the qualified Child and Family Health Nurses, Psychologists, Social Workers, Paediatricians and Psychiatrists who provide professional advice and inform parents on how to manage their responsibilities and roles, as well as maintain a healthy wellbeing.

Issues that are covered in the Residential Stay include:

  • Infant /child sleep and settling difficulties

  • Support with breastfeeding

  • Infant /child feeding difficulties

  • Multiple births

  • Toddler behaviour management strategies

  • Your child’s emotional and physical development

  • Your emotional health and wellbeing

  • Adjustment to parenting including relationship issues

  • And any other parenting concerns you have raised

Procedure

Day 1: Tresillian Child & Family Health Nurses will discuss with you and your partner and form a plan to follow through the difficulties for your family. Partners are able to go to work during the day and return to the Centre, benefiting their economic, social and emotional wellbeing.

Day 2: During Day 2, you will be working with the Nurse assigned to you on the plan formulated with the issues and goals you have identified. Your partner and you have the chance to talk through the situation with a Social Worker or Psychologist, and form relationships with other families who are undergoing similar or same issues. These discussions can deppen your understanding of roles and responsibilites, and encourage a healthy wellbeing on the basis of its social and emotional aspects.

Day 3: By Day 3, parents should feel more confident and more educated with managing issues and reaching their goals. Parenting support groups and interaction sessions with other families gives the opportunity of meeting others, again benefiting the wellbeing through social and emotional aspects. The support groups and interaction sessions are also educative with roles and responsibilites.

Day 4: Day 4 is preparation for leaving the centre. This is the last day to ask any questions related to the skills, roles, responsibilities and ways of maintaing wellbeing discussed during the Residential Stay.

Day 5: By the end of the Residential stay, parents will have a more educated approach to their new lifestyle and will have gained confidence with parenting. Before leaving, Tresillian will also provide you with a list of support contacts in your local community.
